After today's 5-0 win over the Phillies, David Wright had the following to say about:
His first inning home run:
'It's good to hit a ball good the first at-bat. Obviously you want to see results and it's good to see results kind of early on. I got a little confidence after that. ' I just ran into one. I got kind of lucky because I knew we hadn't seen too many pitches that inning. He was probably going to come right after me. I knew Niese was ready to go in the dugout. It's not like we need to take any pitches to give him more time. I just jumped on that first one and kind of got lucky.'
Gaining confidence in dealing with his pinky injury:
'It's definitely not easy. I'm glad that I was able to go out there and get some confidence. Confidence is good for the psyche when you go up there and do well in your first at-bat. It's puts that doubt in the back of your mind that you can go out there and feel pretty good and healthy.'
Recovering from today's game and preparing for tomorrow:
'I'm going to make sure and ice it and do the exercises I'm supposed to do. That will eliminate some the swelling and stiffness. I'm sure tomorrow it will be a little stiff. But like I said, once I get those exercises going, and like I said, the doctors and hand specialists did a good job of giving me pointers and get it loose and the training staff has done a good job getting me ready.'
His ability to contribute with a broken pinky:
'I don't think I would have gone out there and played if I couldn't contribute. I felt ok in the cage today, and it just got more and more loose, and I got more and more mobility with the exercises I was doing yesterday and today. I'm happy and very thankful to the training staff and doctors they were able to get me back on the field so quickly.'
Playing the field and throwing the ball:
'This is going to be a challenge. There's no question about that. I'm glad I got some chances, and [Jon Niese] is good to play defense behind but it's tough because you get a lot of action with the righties pulling the cutter. But I'm glad I was able to get a few balls and make some plays because that helps the confidence too.'
When he feels pain while playing:
'You feel it more on the bad swings and the balls off the end of the bat than the balls you hit cleanly. But hopefully it only gets better. That's the good thing. A lot of it is I'm hesitant as you know how it felt when [I broke the finger] and you're a little hesitant. But once you make a few plays and get a few at-bats, that hesitancy leaves your head.'
