Transcript: Terry discusses David Wright & today's win

After today's 5-0 win over the Phillies, Terry Collins had the following to say about:

David Wright's first at-bat of the game:

'You might as well swing as hard as you can so you can get it over with and see if there is any pain. I'm not surprised [Wright hit a home run]. He's been swinging great. He had a few days off and jumped right back in there and still kept swinging great.'

His curiosity about how Wright would swing the bat with a broken pinky:

'Oh absolutely. I was anxious to see him this morning when he was in the cage this morning. I was concentrating on his hands to see if he was letting go of the bat earlier, and he didn't. I watched him take batting practice downstairs and outside today and he looked great. It's why he's a star.'

Whether or not he asked how he was feeling during the game:

'No. He would have come to me had there been discomfort.'

If had performed poorly, whether his presence would have had such an impact on the team:

'When a guy like David Wright goes out and plays with a broken finger and everybody knows he's got it, and plays the way he plays, all of a sudden the other guys don't hurt as bad. When they have something minor they say 'look, he can do it. So can I.' I think it sends a big message to everybody on the club.'

Whether both Lucas Duda and Ike Davis were impacted by Wright's presence:

'His presence in our lineup means a lot. I knew that last year and I know it now. He gets big hits. When he's swinging good, he's dangerous, and it can be 1-0 in a hurry. I'm so happy for him because of what happened last year to him. I'm just so excited he's getting off to a great start.'

Jon Niese's performance so far this year:

'Both outings, he's been absolutely great. He's kept the ball down, kept the ball on the corners, changing speeds, using his curveball. I actually thought his change-up today was very good. He didn't throw a lot of them but threw enough to certainly give him a look and he threw the ball great.'

The performance of the pitching staff and overall quality of play:

'I like our pitching staff. We don't necessarily have the big names, but I like our pitching. They throw the ball over, they don't beat themselves. We've gotten good outings from everyone of them.'

Bobby Parnell, and the differences he's seen in him so far:

'He's riding high. He's pitching as good as he can pitch. You talk about a guy locating ' his balls are down. He's been throwing the ball good. ' There's always a distinct possibility he learned from the experience he had last summer of closing. He's very calm, he's very relaxed, and one of the biggest things I've seen is . ' for the most part he's stayed ahead in the count, and that's a big difference.'

Ike Davis' struggles:

'He's going to get it going. The thing we kind of forget . ' last year, he only got 120 at-bats instead of the usual 500.So, he's got some catching up to do. He feels great, he says he's seeing the ball good, and so we will keep running him out there.'

Ruben Tejada's strong start:

'We knew the kind of player we had. We knew this kid was a very, very good shortstop. Catches the ball, he's got a great arm. You always wonder, in his second full year, people start to see how he's going to hit, but he's handled himself great. He's getting good balls, getting good pitches to hit, working some counts, getting deep into some counts for the other guys on the team ' he's a good player.'
