Josh Thole left tonight's game against the Phillies in the eighth inning after a collision at home plate with Ty Wigginton.
Thole left the field under his own power.
Following the game, Mets assistant GM John Ricco said Thole was being evaluated for what appeared to be a concussion, adding:
Ricco indicated Thole would likely be back to New York for further evaluation.
It's worth noting, in the last CBA, MLB added a seven-day disabled list for concussed players.
Matthew Cerrone: It was a clean hit. We all know Wigginton plays hard. He dipped his shoulder on his slide home and whacked Thole in the chin, knocking Josh's helmet off and sending him to the ground. It looked bad at first, but Thole got up and was able to walk off field without help. But, he was clearly shaken. Frankly, given his past, I'm surprised Thole didn't just bowl Josh over head on.
In this day and age, I see no way Thole isn't at least put on that 7-day DL and temporarily replaced on the roster by one of Triple-A C Rob Johnson or Lucas May the alternative. He should be re-examined and re-examined. He's a catcher' better safe than sorry.
