Brian Erni: Wow, just'wow. This was an absolutely terrible loss. Errors, wild pitches. This one turned into a circus by the time the game was over. First things first though'

For 14 months off, Young looked very effective. Even though his fastball topped out around 85, true to form, he produced a ton of fly balls and kept hitters of balance with a good change up. Of the two base hits that touched up Young, both of them (by Bryce Harper in the third and Ryan Zimmerman in the fifth) came with two strikes on the hitter. I think that's an area that Young will look to amend in his next start. Overall though, there were plenty of encouraging signs to take out of tonight's start.

Now to the bad, the ugly, and the unspeakable of the night. This was the worst defensive game of the season for the Mets. A sloppy sequence allowed the Nats to plate an extra run in the fifth. With runners on first and second and two outs, Zimmerman singled to center. Torres' throw properly went to the cut off man Ike Davis, who caught Zimmerman hung up between first and second. That's where things fell apart. Davis delivered the throw to Omar Quintanilla, who saw Steve Lombardozzi break for the plate. Quintanilla had Lombardozzi dead to rights, but threw the ball over Josh Thole's head and out of play to allow Washington to plate an unearned run and push Zimmerman all the way to third.

The failure to execute the little things continued in the eighth. With a runner at first and one out, Adam LaRoche hit a roller to Daniel Murphy that had a chance to be a 4-6-3 double play. But Murphy rushed to make the toss to second, bobbled it, and was forced to take the out on the trail runner at first. Zimmerman eventually came around to score on Desmond's game-tying single.

Then in the 10th, the defense melted down. Valdespin booted Zimmerman's lead off grounder. Ike Davis followed by bobbling a sure fire double play ball to move Zimmerman to second. Zimmerman then went to third on a wild pitch by Bobby Parnell. It looked like Parnell had gotten out of it though when he got Desmond to hit a potential game-ending double play ball to Valdespin, but Valdespin made another error to tie up the game.

Even after Scott Hairston delivered a clutch home run in the top of the 12th, Ramirez promptly gave up the lead. Then, he bounced pitch after pitch (one of which eluded Thole), and couldn't find the strike zone. Ramirez almost threw one over Thole's head while intentionally walking Jesus Flores. Eventually, Harper delivered the lethal blow of the night.

What can you say after a loss like this? It was absolutely brutal. If the Mets are going to stay in contention, they'll have to play better than they did tonight, especially with the fierce competition they'll be facing over the next two weeks.
