Dillon Gee, his curveball, and pitching deep into the game

In yesterday's 3-1 win over the Cubs, Dillon Gee pitched eight innings and allowed one run on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts (105 pitches).

Gee's 3-1 victory the Mets' 23rd game holding the opponent to one run or less, which is the most in the game.

'It was all about the command of, certainly his breaking ball and change-up,' Terry Collins said after the game. 'He made pitches throughout the game. He really pitched good today ' that's the Dillon Gee we've seen.'

Of the 105 pitches Gee threw yesterday, 23 of which were curveballs, and he matched a career-high with his eight inning effort.

'I think I got away from throwing the curveball in my last outing. Against a team like them, they're very aggressive. They hit the fastball well. I just wanted to stick with the curveball. ' I think it was important for me to throw that curveball a lot and keep it in their mind.'

Since May 20, Gee is 3-4 with two no-decisions and a 3.11 ERA and has allowed more than three earned runs once over those nine starts.

Michael Baron: Yesterday was Gee's best outing of the year. His game plan played right into the weaknesses of the Cubs lineup ' as he pointed out, they are a very fastball-aggressive team, and so it was crucial he emphasize the use of his off-speed pitches. He would use a good tailing fastball which would go away from the righties and then come inside with either his curveball and change-up which really worked to change the eye level of the hitters. He caught the Cubs out ahead with regularity and induced a lot of weak contact throughout his entire outing.

As Gee pointed out, he relied heavily on his curveball against the Cubs. Often times he has gotten away from that, and that's ok if he has command of his change-up. However, his change-up command has been inconsistent this year and he has had trouble making an adjustment to his curveball when that happens. Yesterday, he had both pitches going which helped him get quick outs and avoid deep counts. It's a strong start for him to build on as he finishes up an uneven first half of the year.
