The Mets won Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but lost Sunday night, against the Dodgers, completing a 4-3 road trip through Chicago and Los Angeles.
The Mets are off today. They begin a three-game series at home against the Phillies tomorrow night, with Vance Worley taking on (4-4, 2.92 ERA) Jon Niese (6-3, 3.55 ERA).
This past weekend, in case you missed it, Pablo Sandoval beat out David Wright by 1.6 million votes to be the National League's starting third basemen during next week's All-Star Game. To read quotes from Wright, check out this post from yesterday.
RA Dickey was the only other player from the Mets to be added to the roster. National League Manager Tony LaRussa has yet to announce who his starting pitcher will be.
Earlier in the day, Terry Collins said Jason Bay will hit off a tee this week in New York, after which the team's medical staff will determine when he will go to Port St. Lucie to begin his rehab.
Collins also said Frank Francisco will play catch today in Port St. Lucie.
Lastly, Collins said Saturday that he's considering having Johan Santana make the team's first start after the All-Star break on Friday, July 13, against the Braves in Atlanta.
Matthew Cerrone: I wouldn't say I'm pissed about Sandoval beating out Wright for the All-Star team, so much as I'm just confused. I don't understand how any player can pull in 2 million votes in five days, let alone a player who is clearly not as good this year as the guy he beat out. Yes, the Giants were home the last six days (which makes it easier to dump ballots on the crowd and encourage voting), while the Mets were away. So, I guess I should assume San Francisco went bananas with some sort of big-time campaign and push, while most Mets fans had already voted for Wright. However, that still doesn't explain how a city with ' maybe ' 200,000 baseball fans can pull in 2 million votes. It's odd. I'm also confused how MLB can defend this system, which clearly results in fielding an inferior team each team, in a game they hype up to have so much meaning. There's a disconnect here and they need to fix it'
In regards to the Mets, I really, really want to see them go hard here and push strong through these next six games before the All Star break. Too often, I feel like I've seen this franchise limp to the break, then come out of it soft and have the season drift away. They're five losses back of the Nationals and six games over .500. I'd love to see the Mets take five of six here, demoralize Philadelphia (more than they already are) and further solidify their position in the division. July is gonna be a kooky month ' especially with the trade deadline, six games against the Nationals and 20 days without a break ' so a big push here could help set a nice tone'
