In a conference call with reporters yesterday, Sandy Alderson discussed today's trade deadline and how quickly thing changed after the All-Star Break.
'If you go back and review the chronology of the last month, you realize things change pretty fast,' Alderson said. 'So, in terms of being aggressively buying for 2012, certainly things changed in that period of time and swiftly. At the same time, we continued to look for opportunities to improve the team both this year and in 2013.'
Alderson went on to say that the Mets wound up with a 'more modest agenda' for 2012.
In regards to Scott Hairston, Alderson referred to Hairston as someone the Mets felt they needed to keep in order to remain competitive for the rest of the season. Alderson informed reporters that the Mets had talked to two or three teams about Hairston, but that none of those teams were willing to part with a top-3 prospect.
Alderson also mentioned that he might talk to Hairston this season about a contract extension, but such talks have not started yet.
When asked about looking for a reliever, Alderson said there weren't players who could make an impact that were available in mid-July.
'I understand fans are disappointed with what has happened the last three weeks,' Alderson said, 'but it's not the end of the season.'
