The Mets have resumed trade discussions with the Diamondbacks for OF Justin Upton, reports Marc Carig, Newsday.
However, while a person familiar with the discussions told Carig Upton 'fits the bill' for what the Mets are looking for in the outfield, the Mets are unlikely to meet Arizona's demands for a trade.
Carig notes that both Zack Wheeler and Matt Harvey remain untouchable for a deal.
Michael Baron, MetsBlog.com:
As I've said all winter long, I just don't see the Mets and Diamondbacks matching up for Upton. There's no denying Upton's talent level and he's as good of a fit as there is for the Mets. He had a subpar year in 2012 by his standards, but he's young, right-handed, and comes with a combination of both power and speed the Mets badly need. But the Mets are not yet in a position to start dealing the kind of prospects it seems would be required to land Upton. And, now that the Mets have dealt R.A. Dickey to the Blue Jays, they can't afford to deal someone like Jon Niese for Upton, either. The price in trade could ultimately go down as Spring Training approaches. But at that point, a) other teams might still match up better in a deal, and b) Kevin Towers might look to move Jason Kubel instead, who is an inferior player to Upton.
