In yesterday's 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks, Johan Santana allowed three runs on nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts in seven innings.
Santana faced 31 batters and threw 108 pitches, 74 of which were strikes.
'We won, and that's the most important thing,' Santana said, according to MetsBlog contributor Amit Badlani. 'The situation that we were, losing four games, I wanted to help and somehow stop it and give our team a chance to win, and that's all I was doing. I was going inning by inning and trying to keep the score there and trying to compete and not let them get ahead.'
Santana earned his first win since September 2, 2010, and improved to 1-2 with a 2.61 ERA in six starts this season.
'That's what aces do,' Terry Collins said. 'They stop losing streaks. They take it upon themselves to do that. They know when times are tough, they've got to raise their game up. He's that guy.'
Michael Baron: Santana's performance can be summed up in one word: Gritty. He didn't have his best stuff and he floated a few change-ups in the middle of the plate which burned him, but he threw strikes and maintained his fastball velocity until the very end. He made some big pitches when he needed to which helped him out of several jams; as Terry Collins said, that's what aces do.
I admired Santana before he had his shoulder problems. But he's showed me this year that while he's still so valuable as a pitcher, his guts and guile might be of equal, if not greater value to this organization. He knew what he was doing from the first moment he arrived at Spring Training and, while he probably knows the stuff isn't what he used to be, he is so smart and has a purpose with each pitch he throws. To me, that cleverness has been his greatest adjustment, and it's truly stunning he's been able to essentially pick up where he left off in 2010.
