The keys to Jon Niese's early season success

In yesterday's 5-0 win over the Phillies, Jon Niese pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five to earn his second win of the year and lower his ERA to 2.13 for the season.

Niese faced 25 batters and threw 102 pitches, 68 of which were strikes.

'I felt the ball was coming out of the hand a lot better than the first game,' Niese told reporters after the game. 'Despite the no hits in the first six innings [last week], I felt I was able to focus in the later innings to get outs [today].'

Niese also said one of the keys to his early season success has been the refinement of his mechanics and slowing them down to let his arm catch up.

Michael Baron: One of the key improvements Niese has made so far has been his in-game efficiency. Perhaps his mechanical refinements has allowed him to have a more consistent arm slot from start to finish, but he is throwing more strikes and better quality strikes throughout his entire outing. With his stuff, that improvement is transforming Niese into a formidable left-handed pitcher in the game. He is providing a stabilizing and reliable presence in the middle of this rotation and has been a key to this team's early season success not only with his effectiveness but also by his ability to shorten the game for the bullpen.
