Mets viewed Boesch as Duda, Cowgill, etc'

Brennan Boesch 1 polaroidThe Mets weren't enthused about Brennan Boesch, who was released by the Tigers last week, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweeted yesterday.

According to Heyman, the Mets expressed interest in Boesch, but ended up viewing him as just another Lucas Duda, Colin Cowgill, Jordany Valdespin and Marlon Byrd.

Boesch was hitting .188 with four strikeouts in 16 at-bats for the Tigers this spring.

Andy Martino of the Daily News reported that the Mets plan to at least discuss any available outfielder.

Final Score: Marlins 4 Mets 2

justin turner ankle

The Mets (7-9) lost to the Marlins (8-10) by the score of 4-2 today in Tradition Field.

The Least You Should Know:

Justin Turner left today's game with a right ankle sprain.

According to reporters on Twitter, Turner was seen walking around without much of a limp. He later tweeted that he doesn't 'think it's too bad. Hopefully just a day or two.'

Brandon Hicks replaced Turner at third base.

Shaun Marcum let up two runs and five hits in four innings.

Matthew Cerrone, MetsBlog.com:

So, if Turner is out, and David Wright is out, who plays third base? I guess right now it's a fight between Hicks, Omar Quintanilla and Zach Lutz. My hunch is Turner will be fine, and he so much as said so to reporters during the game, since he said he's had worse sprains before and been fine. In either case, I can't believe I'm about to split hairs and debate differences between Turner, Hicks, Lutz and Quintanilla, with regards to a starting third baseman. Yikes'

Daniel Murphy making his way back

Daniel Murphy 1 polaroidDaniel Murphy played five innings in a minor league game in Port St. Lucie on Friday.

He took batting practice and only played in the field during the game.

Murphy said he felt good, and he will see how he feels tomorrow, according to ESPN New York.

Murphy has been sidelined with a strained intercostal muscle since February 18, and is yet to play in a Grapefruit League game.

The options at third base for the Mets

Michael Baron, MetsBlog.com:

There are 15 days left before Opening Day. The Mets were trying to figure out how to construct their outfield, most of their bullpen, and fill a void in their starting rotation.

With the possibility of David Wright opening the season on the disabled list, the Mets now have to also figure out how to fill a void open at third base, even if it's only for a week.

The current options include: Justin Turner, Zach Lutz, Brian Bixler and Brandon Hicks.

David Wright 4 polaroid

Hicks is on the 40-man roster, but his defense has been inconsistent this spring, no matter which position he's played.

Bixler has shown some power this spring, although he doesn't have much of a track record. He's a career .189 hitter in 183 games since 2008, and he's played 14 games at third base over that span. He's also not on the 40-man roster, and the Mets are already lacking roster flexibility; I don't see the Mets adding him and cutting someone else to fill what could only be a short-term gap.

Lutz is healthy and can hit for power, he's on the 40-man roster, but he lacks big league experience mostly because he's spent a lot of time injured over the last couple of years. If Wright starts the season on the disabled list, I could envision a scenario where Lutz makes the club, but not as a solution to fill a hole at third base on an everyday basis just yet.

That leaves Justin Turner who, to me, is the most viable option. He has shown over the last couple of years he's a versatile utility man all around the infield; he's shown he can play all four positions at least serviceably over the course of his Mets career, and he has the most experience out of any of the other candidates.

Yesterday, a lot of people asked me about Wilmer Flores, and potentially having him fill the potential void. Yes, he is on the 40-man roster and has played a lot of third base over the last couple of seasons. But a) he has never played a day above Double-A, b) from what understand, the Mets are clearly trying to see what his value is at second base, and c) I don't think it's a good idea whatsoever to use the team's only legitimate hitting prospect to fill a short-term need, even if it's for a day. The Mets have been down this road with Jenrry Mejia, and that has yet to work out for them.

The best thing to do with Flores is to stay the course, and send him to Triple-A, which is what I think will ultimately happen. That way, he can play every day at the position where there might be a long-term need for the organization. They can determine what he is defensively, and see if he can fully develop offensively without the pressures to succeed at the Major League level.

Wright out with rib cage injury, heading to NY for exam

World Baseball Classic WBC

Sandy Alderson spoke with reporters this morning and said David Wright will visit with team doctors in New York today, and return to Port St. Lucie tomorrow.

Alderson said they do not yet know the severity of Wright's injury, nor would he comment on whether Wright is suffering from an oblique or rib cage injury.

Alderson said the team became aware of the injury prior to last night's WBC game in Miami.

Wright hoped the injury would go away, but it didn't and he felt a responsibility to deal with it, Alderson explained.

Alderson does not believe this problem is related to the stress fracture Wright had in his back two years ago.

The team has not yet discussed other options for third base in the event Wright has to miss a significant amount of time, Alderson said.

4:45 am: David Wright was scratched from the lineup before Thursday's World Baseball Classic game against the Dominican Republic.

According to David Lennon of Newsday, Wright said he was having discomfort in his rib cage, which he said is different from the rib cage injury he dealt with last spring.

Wright later spoke with reporters and said doctors from both the Mets and Team USA decided to keep him out of the lineup since he'd been dealing with the discomfort for the past 10 days.

'Obviously it's been fine to play with,' Wright told reporters. However, 'I understand the precaution that's being taken here. I'm obviously disappointed and upset I can't play, but I completely understand.'

Wright has left the World Baseball Classic and will soon visit with Mets doctors in New York.

Wright said he hopes to return to the tournament, but Team USA manager Joe Torre ruled Wright out for tonight's game against Puerto Rico in Miami and is not counting on him for the next round.

Wright is hitting .438 with a home run and 10 RBI in the World Baseball Classic.

Matthew Cerrone, MetsBlog.com:

The way I understand it, the Mets were required to be notified and, once they were aware of Wright's situation, they asked he leave the tournament and report to St. Lucie for an exam. It sucks for Wright and the WBC, but this is the right thing to do. The early buzz is that it's just a small thing, no big deal and Wright will be fine, but those rib cage, stomach muscle, lower back injuries have a way of needing lots of idle time, so let's wait and see how this progresses'

Michael Baron, MetsBlog.com:

Mar. 14, 7:24 pm: This isn't good for Team USA and for the Mets. Hopefully this is a minor bump in the road, but it is one of the reasons why I'd rather this tournament be played in November. The pitchers are in better game shape, and the position players are more primed for game action. And, if a player gets injured, there is time for him to recover before Spring Training. In this case, Opening Day is 17 days away, and Wright's status is a question mark right now'

Mets send Satin, Flores, Torres to minor league camp

The Mets have sent Josh Satin, Wilmer Flores and Carlos Torres to minor league camp.

Flores is on the 40-man roster ' Satin and Torres are not on the 40-man roster.

The Mets now have 42 players remaining in big league camp.

Per MLB rules, any player on the 40-man roster who is in big league camp and gets injured within 15 days of Opening Day would be subject to the Major League disabled list, and would begin accruing big league service time and earning Major League pay.

To keep track of today's roster cuts, keep refreshing this post'

Frank Francisco unsure about Opening Day, says Parnell is closer

Frank Francisco polaroidFrank Francisco threw from a mound for a second time this week, though he said he's still not sure he'll be ready for Opening Day.

'He is the closer,' Francisco said, motioning to Bobby Parnell's locker, according to the New York Post.

'I can't even pitch right now. When I'm back, it's whatever they are going to give me. I'm here, they pay me and I do what they say. If they want me to be the mop, I'll be the mop. If they want me to be The Man out there, I'll be The Man.'

Francisco had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow in December and was shutdown early in camp after experiencing discomfort.

Matthew Cerrone, MetsBlog.com:

I'm really eager to see Parnell in this role. It's time for him to graduate from set-up man and he's going to get the chance. He strikes me as a guy capable of doing this, but I still expect he'll balance stretches of dominance with letting up the occasional game-winning hit. It's the nature of the position these days for most teams, and there isn't much from Parnell's past to suggest he'll suddenly transform in to an elite closer. But, who knows' and that's really the point. He's 28 years old, he's been in the league for a while now (logging more than 200 innings), and it's time to see what he can really do'
