Mike Pelfrey will be non-tendered this winter, according to a 'Mets source,' Mike Puma says in the New York Post. However, he adds, the Mets would still like to sign Pelfrey to a lesser deal.
Earlier this month, Terry Collins and Dan Warthen said they would like the front office to retain Pelfrey next season.
Pelfrey had a 2.29 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings in his three starts in April before an MRI revealed swelling in his right elbow. He underwent Tommy John Surgery on May 1, and his recovery is expected to take approximately 12 months.

It's not surprising that the Mets aren't tendering Pelfrey a contract this winter. I still think it's possible the Mets could bring Pelfrey back on a lesser deal (although Scott Boras is his agent, which makes it difficult), especially if they trade a starting pitcher to get some offense. Besides, bringing Pelfrey back would also allow him to continue and finish his rehab in a facility and with people he is familiar with, and the Mets could see how he progresses as he gets closer to being ready to pitch, which should be around May 1 or so.
