'The Mets want to upgrade their bullpen, and the Brewers' Francisco Rodriguez is on their list of targets, a person familiar with the club's thinking said yesterday,' writes Ken Davidoff of the New York Post.
Rodriguez, 30, is 1-4 with no saves and a 4.00 ERA, allowing 38 hits, 15 walks and 32 strikeouts in 39 games over 36 innings with the Brewers in 2012.
Rodriguez accepted the Brewers arbitration offer last winter and signed a one-year, $8 million contract. He can become a free agent at the end of this season.
The Mets traded Rodriguez to the Brewers last July for Adrian Rosario and Daniel Herrera.
Michael Baron: On the one hand, acquiring a pitcher like Rodriguez would bring experience to the bullpen and it would show that Sandy and ownership are committed to improving and making a run this summer. On the other hand, K-Rod hasn't exactly had a stellar season, and so it's questionable how much he would help.
This season, K-Rod's strikeouts per nine innings are down while his walks per nine innings are up. The opposition is hitting .271 against him overall this season ' that's the highest mark in his career, and right-handed hitters are hitting .323 against him ' he has held righties to a .188 average in his career. It's not due to diminished stuff ' he's throwing his fastball harder this year than he did last year. The home run ball has been a problem for him so far, but that could be a product of where he plays most of his home games. I wonder if coming back to Citi Field ' a place he is familiar with ' could help him return to form, but the Mets need more answers than questions in that bullpen going forward.
