NYP: Sandy discusses trade deadline, team's position

In a Q&A with Steve Serby in the New York Post, Sandy Alderson says the Mets are in a different position today than they were a year ago, and discusses if he considers the Mets 'buyers' right now, saying:

'Well, we're serious lookers right now. We'll see where we are as we get closer to the deadline. Right now the market for players is not quite as defined as it will be in the next couple of weeks.'

Alderson expressed concern about the bullpen and their ability to hold leads and manage short deficits.

When we're behind by a run or so and we end up getting blown out,' Alderson explained. 'It doesn't allow for many come-from-behind opportunities in the eighth and ninth inning, so what happens when we're behind is just as important as what happens when we're ahead.'

Michael Baron: The bullpen is unquestionably the team's most glaring need right now, and should be addressed first and foremost if the team is looking for help from the external markets. I realize the trade market isn't defined yet ' it's still early in the trade season. But, it's no longer early for the Mets bullpen ' I worry about their continued ineffectiveness and how that can not only impact the outcome of games, but the team's morale as wins become more and more valuable and losses become more difficult to manage.

With that said, the worst thing that can happen is they make a panic move to address a short-term need. Sandy and his group can't make a knee-jerk reaction out of desperation and possibly get the wrong players to fill their needs. That can come at a greater cost to what is happening right now in the bullpen'
