Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the Mets are seeking a right-handed hitting catcher and relief help as the trade deadline approaches.
Sherman lists Rockies C Ramon Hernandez, Red Sox C Kelly Shoppach, and Mariners C Miguel Olivo as possible targets for the Mets as the trade deadline approaches.
Sherman says the Mets are 'very interested' in Hernandez, although he is currently on the disabled list with a hand strain ' he is close to returning from the injury.
Hernandez, 36, is hitting .215 with a .260 on-base percentage, four home runs and 15 RBI in 101 at-bats this season. He signed a two year, $6.4 million contract with the Rockies this past off-season.
However, Sherman writes 'Mets officials are concerned about disrupting the positive eco-system around the team by adding the wrong personalities or unsettling the pitching by bringing in a catcher in midstream ' although they would still do so if they found the right catcher.'
In addition, according to Sherman, Sandy Alderson reiterated that the organization's top-tiered prospects are not available in any trade this summer, saying 'I will not trade anyone I believe is on schedule to help us in 2013-14.'
Meanwhile, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York says the Rockies have always liked Justin Turner, and the Mets could use him to acquire Hernandez instead of dealing their core prospects.
In addition, Rubin suggests that RHP Matt Belisle could also be a fit for the Mets bullpen.
Belisle, 32, is 3-2 with a 1.77 ERA in 42 relief appearances this season, having allowed just nine earned runs and 45 hits with eight walks and 39 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings this season.
Belisle signed a two year, $8.125 million contract with the Rockies this past winter. There is a $4.25 million mutual option on the deal with a $250,000 buyout.
