Ruben Tejada collected three hits in five at-bats while scoring two runs and driving in one last night against the Phillies.
Following the win, Terry Collins told reporters:
'To come up here and have the discipline at the plate he's had is truly amazing' We know he can play shortstop. Jose Reyes is a great player, but, I'll tell you what, defensively, Ruben Tejada can play with anybody.'
Since coming off the disabled list on June 24, Tejada is hitting .385 (15-39).
In his last 18 games, the 22-year-old shortstop is hitting .403 (31-77) with 14 runs scored, while improving his season average to .326.
Vinny Cartiglia: Man, Tejada has been great for the Mets. And his play thus far has many fans asking, 'Jose Who?' While the comment is made in jest, his play has truly made the loss of Reyes much easier to cope with. As crazy as it sounds, this sentiment is expressed to me daily, be it on Twitter, Facebook, Email or barbershop conversation.
Matthew Cerrone: I agree with Vinny. I get lots of e-mail too, but mostly mocking me for repeatedly saying for years how I thought Tejada would end up being a really good utility player, sort of a Macier Izturis type. He's obviously changing my mind. He looks so solid and mature beyond his years, and his poise and confidence are enough to make me second-guess myself. I hope it continues, because he's a lot of fun to watch'
