D-Backs could hold on to their outfielders

Adam Eaton 1 polaroidIn a report for MLB.com, Richard Justice says Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers could decide to hold onto both Justin Upton and Jason Kubel and send both Adam Eaton and A.J. Pollack to the Minor Leagues to start the season.

In regards to Upton, Justice suggests he might remain in Arizona, 'unless the Texas Rangers blow Towers away with an offer.'

However, Justice notes, 'as [Towers'] needs develop, he'll have something as good as cash to swing a deal. He'll have inventory.'

Michael Baron, MetsBlog.com:

Towers definitely has intriguing excess, and players who should interest the Mets to fill their glaring holes in the outfield. Based on what Towers has reportedly been seeking from Texas for Upton (Jurickson Profar or Elvis Andrus), the Mets probably don't match up for a deal there. Kubel could probably be had inexpensively, but he's left-handed and isn't a very good outfielder.

I wonder if Eaton could interest the Mets. He fits the mold what the Mets are trying to accomplish which is to acquire and develop players who are under control for a long period of time. There's no room for him right now in the Arizona outfield, and as Justice says, he is probably big league ready at this stage of his development. He is small, doesn't hit for much power and is left-handed, but Eaton has a .456 OBP in three Minor League seasons, has 83 doubles, and has posted a .966 OPS with stolen 98 bases in 122 attempts over the same time period. He's fast, has a strong throwing arm and has gap to gap capability, and in the big parks of the NL East, he could be a great catalyst for the top of the order.
