Performance Review: Santana lacked command of the change-up

In last night's loss to the Cubs, Johan Santana allowed seven runs on 13 hits including three home runs in just 4 2/3 innings.

Santana allowed five runs and seven hits in the fifth inning and only recorded two outs in that inning, and the 13 hits he allowed overall matched a career-high.

'I just wanted to continue and try to get some outs,' Santana explained, according to WFUV's Steve Simineri. 'The execution was poor. I wasn't able to keep the ball down and they hit it out.'

Santana fell to 6-5 for the season and saw his ERA rise nearly 1/2 run from 2.76 to 3.24 for the season.

'It was a tough one,' said Santana. 'Those guys were very aggressive. They were swinging right away and putting the ball in play. I made a couple of mistakes and they hit it out of the ballpark.'

Michael Baron: Santana didn't look comfortable right from the start last night. He looked like he was struggling with his mechanics and release point, and his change-up was sitting up and appeared to float rather than dive down. That resulted in a lot of very hard contact. While he was able to keep the Cubs at Bay for the first four innings, his poor execution caught up with him in the fifth. He allowed the first two runners to reach and then Anthony Rizzo hit a long three-run home run to take the wind out of the Mets sails. He allowed another solo home run in the inning and ultimately allowed five runs in the fifth which really set the team back as a result.

For the second straight start, Santana struggled with his change-up and had to resort to his slider. In his last start against the Dodgers, he had great control of that pitch but he didn't have that same feel for it last night. His fastball velocity was also a tick lower than normal and the differential between that and both his change-up and slider just wasn't enough to fool anyone, even when he executed well. The positives from this start is that his arm is healthy and suffered no ill-effects from the collision with Reed Johnson at first base ' as disappointing as last night was, comfort can be taken in that.
